I Have Oily Skin! What Are My Options?

Is oily skin making life unbearably difficult for you?

Oily skin is a common problem for many men and women. How many times have you looked at a photo and thought to yourself, ‘Goodness, my forehead is so shiny!’ If this is you, we want you to know that you’re not alone… and there are solutions.

What’s the root cause of your oily skin?

A lot of people are sadly mistaken in believing that their oily skin is due to something they eat. And so they try and eat a diet that contains as little fat as possible when in fact, the problem is skin deep – literally. The sebaceous glands which are located under the skin layer are responsible for the secretion of oil. The bigger these glands are the more oil will be secreted.

The major root cause of oily skin is genetics. Oily skin is inherited. Heat, diet, hormones, and humidity can all aggravate the amount of oil produced by the sebaceous glands but they are only factors, not the root cause. The biggest temptation that people suffering from oily skin often succumb to is the frequent washing of their faces. This is counterproductive as washing the face strips the skin of oil leaving it dry which sends a signal to the sebaceous glands to secrete more oil!

It must be mentioned that oily skin has its fair share of advantages. Oil goes a long way in making the skin appear younger and firmer while reducing the onset of wrinkles. Sebum is especially helpful in keeping the skin properly hydrated and acts as a barrier against bacteria and other pathogens.

What do doctors recommend for oily skin?

Use a gentle cleanser and toner twice a day after washing your face. Cleansing prevents oil from clogging your pores and toner helps to remove excess oil and makeup traces to ensure that the skin has been thoroughly cleansed. Regular use of sunscreen SPF 15 and above will reduce the drying effects of the sun’s rays.

For those who wear makeup, purchase brands that are specifically designed for oily skin or those that are made using oil-free formulas. Keep blotting paper in your handbag as it will be useful in helping to remove excess oil during the day.

Cutting-edge skin care solutions from ACME Dermatology

ACME Dermatology prides itself on being at the forefront of offering cutting-edge solutions to patients with oily skin. Among the procedures you can come in for include:

Botox

Botox isn’t just for wrinkles! Botox has a myriad of uses and countless studies show its ability to help decrease the amount of oil produced in patients with oily skin (when injected along the ‘T-zone’ of the face). The treatment also helps to reduce pore size at the same time.

Aquapure Facial

Aquapure Facial is a specialized technique that involves the removal of dead skin cells from the face followed by a deep cleanse designed to eliminate excess sebum. A small electrical current is then gently passed over the skin to tighten pores.

Chemical Peels

ACME Dermatology provides glycolic acid peels that gently remove the topmost skin layer to reveal new, healthy skin. This peel is suitable for all skin types but is especially helpful for those with oily skin, it gently exfoliates skin layers while clearing sebaceous glands of excess sebum.
